Kenya national union of nurses – Kiambu chapter calls off strike

The County Government of Kiambu under the leadership of Governor Ferdinard Waititu and the Kenya Union of Nurses – Kiambu Chapter has called off a nurses’ strike that was slated for tomorrow 6th February 2019.

This follows deliberations between the two parties in a sitting convened by Governor Waititu. Other matters pertaining to the nurses’ welfare like impeding promotions and re-designations have also been effected by the County Government.

The announcement of the calling off of the strike has been made by the Union’s Secretary John Njoroge Kimani. Over 1,300 nurses working with the County Government will therefore continue rendering their services in the 115 medical facilities run by the county.

There has been an alarm after nurses threatened to go on a nation-wide strike. This is expected to slow down the delivery of services in all government facilities. Health being a devolved function falls under County Government. There has been calls from different actors to Counties to have their own Collective Bargain Agreements with health professionals to avert nation-wide strikes.
